In last week’s post, I discussed how I conduct an in-person Reiki session. Reiki can also be performed from a distance. In fact, one of my favorite things about Reiki is that it is not constrained by either time or distance for someone who has been trained and attuned accordingly. Setting aside the time aspect of a Reiki session for now, let’s look at how I conduct Reiki sessions and what you can expect from such a session. (If you’re a bit confused right now and would like some background information, you can read what I’ve written previously about what Reiki is and how it works and about how Reiki supports overall health.)
When you schedule your first appointment with me, I ask you to complete a health history form to give me an overall picture of your health. For any distance session, I also ask you, when you are scheduling, to indicate your desired outcome(s) or focus for the session, including any new developments that may have come up for you since your last Reiki session. If you have scheduled a session with me several days or weeks in advance, I will likely contact you to ask if your desired focus has changed; if nothing has, I will continue with your initially indicated concern as my main focus in the session.
Ideally, a few minutes before our session, you will settle and calm yourself in a quiet space that is as free of distraction as possible. You may choose to lie down on a bed or to sit in a comfortable chair, and you may want to listen to some calming music. You can even be traveling on public transportation, sitting with your eyes closed and with earbuds in, to to keep you as calm and undistracted as possible.
Please note: It is okay if you are interrupted during our session, or even if something comes up and you can’t sit quietly at all, but please try not to be driving or doing something that requires much focused attention! A Reiki session can be very relaxing, or it can drastically affect your mood in some other way. I believe that Reiki has an inate intelligence and will not put you in danger by causing you to fall asleep or become distracted while you are performing a task requiring your full attention, but it’s best to avoid even the chance if at all possible.
Just before our session is scheduled to begin, I place myself in a quiet room free from distraction, listening to some light ambient music or natural sounds. I tend to have several crystals and stones nearby, as they help soothe and focus my mind.
When it is time for the session to begin, I take a few deep breaths to center myself, then offer a prayer and/or set the intention for the session. I tune in to your energy, focusing all of my attention on sensing your energy. Next, I open myself to act as a vessel for Reiki to flow through so that the energy may go where it is most needed to do the highest good—in general and specifically regarding the intentions we discussed before the session. I usually also offer myself as a surrogate for you. (This means that as I sit, I perform the hand positions on myself; when I place hands are above my third eye, the energy is flowing into your third eye, and if I place my hands above my kidneys, the energy will flow into your kidneys.)
I next envision us in my mental Reiki room. This is my vision of my ideal Reiki room, complete with treatment table, soft white light, any healing tool that might help, and any of your or my spirit guides who want to assist in the session. I envision you lying on the treatment table and me standing above you as I would if we were in a physical location, with our guides arranged in a circle around the treatment table.
Finally, because I have offered myself as your surrogate, I begin by placing my hands on the top of my head, where the crown chakra is located. At the same time, I envision myself in my mental Reiki room, placing my hands on the top of your head. I also feel the Reiki moving through my hands and into your body and my body simultaneously. (This only sounds complicated; it’s a very natural process of combining what I’m doing and feeling with visualization, to help me focus.)
Generally, I then move down through the seven main chakras (third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacrum, and root), and then to the knees and feet, spending about 3 to 5 minutes in each position. Sometimes, I will feel an energetic pull toward a certain part of your body, so I may make a detour from the head-to-feet path. At each position, I focus on the Reiki flowing through me and into you. I stay in that position until the energy is flowing freely there or I feel drawn to another position. I may also come back to a position that I have already visited in the same session.
Reiki will flow wherever it is most needed in your physical and energetic bodies, so technically, I could keep my hands in only one position for the entire session—and don’t even need to use physical hand positions—but I do this to help me stay focused on the process of sensing and responding to the flow of your energy, where it is just right or out of balance in some way.
When our time is coming to a close, I may mentally sweep your aura (along with physically sweeping mine), this time to help “smooth” any energies that may have become disrupted or unsettled during our session. I will then make notes of impressions or messages, if any, that came to me during our session, and then I will send you an email reminding you of how to take care of yourself in the time immediately after a session.
What You Can Expect to Experience During and After Our Session
Everyone has different experiences during and after Reiki sessions—some feel energy shifts (for example, hot, cold, tingling) or experience shifts in their vision or hearing, and others experience nothing out of the ordinary. Some people also cry—sometimes gently, sometimes in great sobs, sometimes somewhere in between. Still other people simply feel incredibly relaxed. Whether you experienced any or none of these, it is important to remember that the experience was exactly as it needed to be for you. Reiki acts for as long as it needs to act, and in the ways it is most needed, and the shifts can be sudden and dramatic, or so subtle and slow as to be almost imperceptible.
Please be sure to drink a nice glass of cold water as soon after your session as possible, and be gentle with yourself. If you need to take a little more time than usual alone in the hours and days following a session, do so as much as possible. Self-care is very important during this time.
If you feel emotions come up over the hours, days, or weeks, after a session, it is best to allow them to come up to be healed, and make sure you are getting support and TLC if you need it. Always, always, always, do your best to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as proper hydration helps the body process the emotions and energy that are moved and cleared via Reiki.
