I don’t know about you, but I feel like there’s just been so much noise in the past few months. There were the holidays, then the event in the US Capitol, then the inauguration. And through all of that, of course, there has been COVID and the vaccine. And if you’re on social media or “news” outlets, you see and hear opinions on all of that.
Noise! Noise, Noise, Noise, Noise.
When I’m bombarded with all that noise, it’s just too hard to hear myself. It’s too easy to get caught up in fear, in other people’s opinions, in worry, even in other people’s elation. It’s emotional and mental contagion. I’ve continued my relative quiet on the blog and social media because I don’t want to add to the clamor; I want to contribute more to the peace.
The louder things get out there (in the world), no matter how hard I try, I can’t avoid the chaos and contagion. That’s why in noisy times like this, I find it especially important to keep my contact with the outside world as limited as possible. Actually, what I really mean is that I find it especially important to keep in steadier, more constant contact with myself. And that naturally leads to me spending less time taking in from the rest of the world so I can really take better care of myself, paying attention to my own mental and physical needs—especially important when it is so noisy outside, so easy to get distracted.
Turning down the Noise
So I’m planning to spend February just as I’ve spent the past few months: taking my time, not rushing, focusing on my family and especially on my self-care. After nearly ceasing my consumption of news and social media in November and December, I gradually increased my intake in January but have been sure to limit this to no more than an hour a day—and to take in more humor (Bernie memes!) and inspiration than current events. I’ve continued to make my Miracle Morning Life SAVERS a priority. On any day that my workload is light, I add cardio to my daily strength training (being sure to not cross the threshold into fatigue or pain) and perform all the necessary attendant aftercare (protein supplements and showers, especially) so I am actually getting stronger and feeling better rather than wearing myself down. I’ve also been very fortunate to have a massage therapist friend give me massages in my home. Despite having gained back all of the weight I lost from November 2018 through June 2020, I have felt better physically, mentally, and emotionally in the last three weeks of January than I had in at least 6 years prior.
In addition to all of this, I’ve been listening to my own quiet inner voice and doing things that bring me joy and/or further quiet my mind, like doing puzzle books, reading, and cuddling with my kiddos and spouse whenever I have the chance—especially in the evenings.
