Communication with Spirit (and spirits) can take many forms, from meditation, shamanic journeying, near-death experiences, automatic writing, and mediumship to channeling, spirit boards, divination, all the clairs, and more. The beings we communicate with can include the Divine, our individual oversouls, angels, nature spirits of all descriptions, spirit guides, animal totems, souls of the deceased, and more besides. Some stones and crystals can help us better tune in to particular entities and messages. And some substances can do the same. Of course, no matter which method or aids you choose, practice really helps.

Just like in mundane encounters, there are also safety considerations to keep in mind: whether whoever you’re communicating with is really who it claims; whether it is friend or foe—or just some bored passerby whose attention you got (a spirit-form “rubbernecker”); whether it is trustworthy; whether the message it is providing is good, bad, or indifferent; how to cut ties with someone who has overstayed a welcome. And that’s only a start.

With all of these possibilities and permutations, how should you even start?

I think it best to treat this like any normal, mundane communication situation that you want to go well—take into account your own choice and preference, but also the preferences and temperaments of the spirit(s) you want to interact with. Start by considering which spirit(s) you wish to contact, and why. Think about where it might be best for you to have the conversation—for example, in a quiet, out-of-the-way place for a shy nature spirit, in a crowded public place for a real extrovert, or somewhere really relaxing to you if you’re nervous.

Once you have figured that out, you can research if there are any forms of communication preferred by that spirit, and if that spirit has any specific desires. Some spirits—for example, some lwa/loa—require certain types of offerings before they will even consider addressing a petitioner, whereas others, such as Kwan Yin, are likely to respond if you simply say their name with an open heart and a fervent desire to communicate.

Next, you can determine if you might need any special tools or intermediaries to aid you. For example, the crystals angelite and danburite can help you with angelic communication, but danburite can also help with communication with spiritual entities other than angels. Alternatively, for example, if you already communicate with earth spirits such as dwarves but you want to begin communicating with the spirits of crystals and are having difficulties, you can ask the dwarves to help you.

Depending on the mode of contact you’re using, your spiritual tradition, or the spirit(s) you’re trying to contact, you’ll want to think of any practical safety considerations, such as whether you should cast a protective circle or request some spiritual reinforcement.

It’s best to also have a specific question/request/topic in mind before you start; some spirits don’t mind some bumbling around, but some are very impatient and will resent what they consider a waste of their time.

Also keep in mind how you might wrap up the conversation once you’ve gained what you want, or if the situation starts to go south. Some spirits will be okay with a quick “Thank you; I have to leave now,” whereas others will require additional offerings, words of praise, or something else—at least if you want to have a positive, or even neutral, relationship with the spirit after this encounter.
