Recently, someone I have known for a long time came out to me as transsexual. I was not really surprised when they came out to me. I was happy that they told me, that they had come to admit it to themself. I was also a little sad, because I have an inkling—but only an inkling, given that I myself am cis—of how challenging this path may become for my friend as they come out to a larger world that’s still so cruel to trans folk.
This friend has known me for a very long time and had every reason to feel secure in my love of them. They also had many reasons to feel safe and supported in coming out to me, especially because they know that I have a number of out LGBTQ+ friends. But it was still hard for my friend to say out loud to me that they are trans—perhaps because I was the first person they came out to—and my friend still experienced doubt and a little worry about telling me.
So, please know, if you need to come out to someone and feel like you have no one to speak to safely–or if you just need to practice saying the words to someone, to get over that initial hurdle of admitting it–you can tell me. My inbox is a safe place, and I will treasure you, whether you’re questioning how you identify, are ready to come out in a blaze of glory, or are somewhere in between. So if you need to talk or want to make connections, feel free to contact me. I will hold space for you to say what you need to say and to be exactly who you are.
Bright blessings and love to you, my darlings!
