Did you know that although I use my intuition to read oracles, act as a channel, and perform readings for people, I consider myself primarily an energy worker? I have a natural intuitive sense for the energies of people, places, and items. If you’ve had an intuitive reading from me before, you’ll know that I mostly experience claircognizance, just “knowing” information, with a little bit of clairsentience. When it comes to energy work, though, I experience mostly clairsentience. That is, I can feel the flow of energy around people. Frequently, I also experience a sensation in my body where a client is feeling pain or discomfort, and that guides me to direct energy toward that location. Fortunately, I can cleanse residual energies from objects fairly easily, though it’s more challenging with living beings, given the dynamics of free will and life events that constantly influence us.
Despite the challenges—well, because of them—I love to help people clear away old, stagnant energy and welcome in fresh energy. I think of energy work like throwing open all the windows in the house on the first nice day of spring: The breezes move into the house, gently displacing the stagnant, stale air that has built up in the home over the winter. With the breeze come new smells, a bit more light, a new vibrancy, and possibly a different perspective.
This is why I love Reiki. At its most basic, Reiki is simply a method of redirecting the energy of the universe (which you can think of as that fresh spring breeze). As a Reiki practitioner, I am guiding the energy that’s just “hanging out” in the universe, like a wind funnel gathers and channels air. Once directed, this universal energy works toward renewing and clearing away stagnant energy, and toward replenishing any depleted energy stores.
So, who can benefit from Reiki, and what’s it used for?
Everyone and everything—even situations we find ourselves in—can benefit from Reiki. And in my opinion, Reiki is best used for/thought of as a form of renewal and restoration. It helps us reset our bodies, minds, and spirits (or at least move them closer to) to their natural “defaults.” Put another way, it helps us clear away the chalk to a clean slate.
I use Reiki on my kids when they injure themselves, to ease some of the worst pain. When I have overdone it a bit while exercising, Reiki again helps take the edge off. Recently, I fell on uneven pavement, which ruptured a varicose vein in my calf. After a while, a blood clot formed, which caused tightness and swelling where the varicose vein had been. While I was waiting to see a doctor, Reiki helped soothe the pain and reduce the heat and swelling.
Reiki is not a panacea. Just like that spring breeze coming into the house doesn’t get all the old fusty air out of your house and doesn’t clear away all the dust, Reiki can’t do all your body’s “spring cleaning” itself. When you do spring cleaning on your house, you’re allowing fresh air and sunshine to clear away and destroy some germs, but you’re also probably using a dusting cloth, the vacuum, and maybe a lot of water and some essential oils or other cleaning agents. Cleaning up and clearing our own energy is much the same; Reiki acts like the fresh air and a bit like the sunshine, but we get the best results when we use more than one of the tools in our buckets.
If you experience chronic pain or discomfort, you’ve probably found that a combination of things works best to offer you relief, including over-the-counter medications, physician care, chiropractic care, massage, dietary supplements, physical therapy, prescription medications, and more. In such a case, Reiki provides just a bit more support to your body, in the form of energy.
I use Reiki on my husband when he has a migraine. No, it doesn’t often get rid of the pain fully, because it’s often gentle and slow-acting, particularly on big pain. Again, however, it takes the edge off the pain until pain medication kicks in, and it helps with the lingering aftereffects so there’s not so much “hangover” after the pain is gone.
In times of anxiety, worry, or fear, Reiki helps induce calm. When my thoughts are scattered, or when I am preoccupied and worried about a situation, using Reiki on myself or sending Reiki to the situation helps quiet my mind, relaxing me enough that my inner chatter slows and I gain a clearer perspective on the situation.
How strong is Reiki, and how quickly does it work?
Reiki works slowly (comparitively speaking) and gradually. Reiki is powerful, but it’s not very strong if you think in terms of medication dosages. Although you can feel some effects during or right after a Reiki session (especially in terms of relaxation), far more typical is a gradual onset of relief and a deeper sense of peace and relaxation—faster than doing nothing at all (obviously), but not as fast as pharmaceuticals. As with so many natural healing methods and substances, Reiki’s onset is slower than the effects of phamaceuticals, but it also seems to have longer-lasting effects.
In this way, Reiki is more like repeated small doses of a medication rather than a singal large dose. Reiki begins to work right away, but it works gradually over time. As I said before, what it’s really doing is giving a boost to—amplifying—the body’s normal healing. It amplifies the effects of medicine; amplifies and supports the body’s natural healing; amplifies the soothing effects and detoxification process begun by massage. It can help induce deeper relaxation so the muscles “soften” before or after chiropractic adjustments, so the adjustment’s effects are more effective and longer-lasting.
What’s the bottom line?
I find that Reiki is an ideal maintenance therapy, helping me to find and maintain inner balance, peace, and calm amidst chaos, as well as elevate and uphold a higher baseline of physical wellness. Like most maintenance therapies, it works best when used or received regularly, though even sporadic use is immensely beneficial, even if those benefits are not immediately noticeable. As such, I encourage anyone and everyone to consider it as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
