Over the past few weeks, with everything as chaotic as it has been in the world and yet so much still the same in my day-to-day life, I’ve felt off-kilter. (I’m sure you can relate.) It has been hard to think, hard to make decisions, and even harder to hear my intuition.
To help, I have gone back to an old habit of doing a simple one- or two-oracle (card and/or rune) reading to help me get in the proper mental space for the day. I have two daily requests: (1) Please tell me what I most need to know today for the highest outcome for myself and my family, and (2) Please tell me what I most need to do today for the highest outcome.
Multiple times in the past week or so, when I have asked what I most need to do, the runes have called to me. I always raise my mental eyebrows at this because in my experience, the runes are highly educational, focusing more on the theory of how and what you need to be doing than on giving explicit instructions. In these times, the rune has been the same: Eihwaz (eye-wahz). In considering what to write for this week’s blog post—what might be helpful or instructive, given the current upheaval and uncertainty for everyone—I remembered that Eihwaz turned up for me again this morning, and perhaps everyone can benefit from its guidance.
The keywords given for Eihwaz in The Book of Runes include “defense” and “avertive powers.” Essentially, this rune reminds us that if something seems to be blocking our path, keeping us from getting to our goals, this likely isn’t a permanent situation but only a delay—and a delay may actually be a good thing. Back when I used to drive to work every day, I would get really stressed out when I was stuck behind a slow driver, or when traffic was backed up and I thought I was going to be late. The lesson of Eihwaz in such a situation would be that this is probably happening for a reason. Maybe that slow driver ahead of you on the two-lane road prevented you from being involved in a five-car pileup on the Interstate just after your on-ramp.
Basically, when you see Eihwaz, it’s time to exercise some patience and to not be hasty. Move slowly and steadily, and try to see ahead a bit: try to anticipate difficulties and to do your best to avoid them. Sit back, watch, make a decision, and move steadily toward that decision.
Here’s the lesson I think we can all benefit from, especially with so much up in the air currently regarding jobs, COVID-19, the economy, and how they all relate:
Receiving Eihwaz, you are put on notice that, through inconvenience and discomfort, growth is promoted. This may well be a trying time; certainly it is a meaningful one. So set your house in order, tend to business, be clear, and wait on the Will of Heaven.[1]
