In previous blog posts, I have provided an overview of how to use the 5 Reiki principles to add balance and peace to our lives, and in-depth discussions of how we can do so with the first and second Reiki principles. This week, we’re looking at the third principle.
This principle is often translated as “Just for today, I will do my work honestly.” As I have mentioned previously, I change the wording of this principle for both morning and evening. In the morning, I change the wording to be in the present tense, to remind myself to do my work honestly in all moments throughout the day, including this moment, not just in the future: “Just for today, I do my work honestly.” In the evening, I change the wording to “Just for tonight, I let go of thoughts of work.”
Let’s look at these two versions separately.
I Do My Work Honestly
Being honest has rarely been a problem for me. In fact, I have sometimes been a little too honest.
When I consider the phrasing “do my work,” I am thinking not only of the work I am paid to do but also of the work of raising my children, the work of maintaining my relationship with my husband, the work of building relationships with others, and the work of self-cultivation—in other words, the work of being human.
What this principle means to me, then, is to act with integrity in all things I do.
When I am tired and feel like emailing a client when I know that a two-minute phone call will save my client time and money, I repeat this principle to myself, and I make the phone call rather than sending the email and prolonging the process unnecessarily.
When I receive an email full of vitriol, complaints about things I have no control over, and personal attacks, rather than reply in kind from a place of hurt or anger, I remind myself of this principle and reply carefully, addressing the writer’s concerns that I am able to, but in no way acknowledging hurtful or angry comments. Replying to insults often starts a back-and-forth that only devolves and makes the situation worse, rather than solving anything. I thus act with integrity.
(While writing this post, in fact, I have decided to change the wording of this principle to “Just for today, I do my work with integrity.”)
I Let Go of Thoughts of Work
This wording is important to me because when I lie down to sleep—especially if I’m overly tired, which is easy to be with two young children—I tend to think about all of the things that troubled me during the day, or all of the things that I had to leave incomplete. For me, both of those conditions are usually related to work. Because I’m tired, my mental wheels can spin and spin unproductively, thinking about how I could have done things better or about how out-of-control things might get the next day because I haven’t finished this or that project.
I therefore include this principle in my nightly recitation to remind myself that my work is done for the day and I need to be unwinding instead of winding myself into a restless night. Incidentally, when I wake in the middle of the night and my brain shifts to thinking about the upcoming day’s work, I repeat this principle to myself—sometimes multiple times—for the same reason.
After all, if I spend my sleeping time thinking and worrying—remember the first Reiki principle?—about work, I will be in no fit shape to take care of that work the next day. And that will only increase that night’s preoccupation with work and what I could have done better or more of.
