Those of my readers who follow me on Facebook likely know that I have being providing Reiki sessions for some time in person and for clients who received readings, but you may not know that I now officially offer Reiki sessions as a standalone offering. In fact, some of my new readers—Welcome!—are actually here because they recently received a Reiki session from me.
This week, I’m going to explain the basics of how I perform a distance Reiki session, as it’s slightly different from how I perform an in-person Reiki session. Before we get started, if you are wondering what the heck Reiki is or how it works, please check out my FAQ page …
Okay, have you had all your questions answered? If not, please contact me. If so, that’s excellent! Let’s keep going.
Preparation
A few minutes before the session is to begin, I enter my sacred space from which I perform all of my readings and Reiki. This isn’t a physical sacred space, though I do have a preferred place in which to do such readings. Rather, this is a process to get me mentally and energetically focused. I light a candle, dab my third eye with an essential oil (usually dragon’s blood, though it may be frankincense, rose, or a healing blend, depending on the need of me and you, my client, on the day). As I do this, I announce my intention to my guides, letting them know that I am preparing to perform a Reiki session and would like their assistance.
Next, I settle myself physically in place. I find your location on a map. I begin playing a recording of music or other sound (currently a heartbeat track with healing tones beneath it) to help me focus. Next, I place my hands in prayer position and announce my intention for the session. It usually goes something like this:
Dearest Archangel Raphael and ___________ (my healing guides), I set my intention to help _______ (your name), in _________ (your location), with/to __________ (your concern). I offer myself as a vessel for Reiki to be delivered to ________ (your name). For this session, I offer myself as surrogate for _______ (your name), and I trust that Reiki will go where it is most needed to heal and to clear away any energetic blockages or outmoded beliefs that are no longer serving _________ (your name) in this respect. I request that all that happens be in the highest good for all involved.

The Session
Once I have thus set the intention, I intone the names of certain Reiki symbols, as this further helps me focus and connect with the universal life energy. At this point, I can feel the energy in my hand, foot, or third eye chakra (or all three), and I begin.
I begin by placing my hands on or around the crown chakra for a few moments, feeling the universal life energy flowing through me for you. There is a “typical” progression I follow down the chakras and with a few other places in the body, but I let my intuition and my healing guides lead me. The energy in my hand chakras feels different when it is time for me to move to another position, and so I follow its guidance.
Because I use myself as a surrogate, the next area that your energetic body is calling for energy in brings itself to awareness through my body. That area of my body and my palms almost feel magnetically drawn together. So, let’s say your energetic body wants more energy to come into your third chakra next. My solar plexus will begin to throb energetically, and my hands will almost “itch” to go there. If I move my hands to some position other than my solar plexus, they will actually steadily creep toward my solar plexus.
I therefore work my way basically downward through the chakras using this process, though sometimes the energy will draw me back upward to a chakra that has already been addressed, or to another spot higher on the body. There are many energetic pathways in the body (called meridians in traditional Chinese medicine), so I trust that this urging and prompting is simply moving me along the meridian in the order best for effecting the healing or change that we set our intent for (when you told me what you wanted help with, and when I offered my prayer before the session).
All through the process, I keep an “ear” out for my guides’ promptings. Sometimes, they give me a word or phrase to pass on to you, sometimes an image. I take notes, as I know any information coming through is meant for you. Sometimes, the guides indicate a body part or area that you need to be paying more attention to or treating differently; sometimes, this is an action for you to take to more effectively continue your healing process. Sometimes, they offer me no information at all to share with you.
If I sense resistance or some challenge in the energy flow—perhaps either you or I are not quite comfortable or are feeling some resistance or distraction—I invite you energetically into my Reiki room. This is a sacred mental and healing space that I go to when I need a little more help and/or focus. (Essentially, it’s just a deeper level of consciousness, and envisioning the Reiki room helps me to access that deeper level of calm and focus.) The room is small and cozy, and bright, and it has a table, couch, or chair available for you (energetic you, obviously) to sit or lie on, and my guides and Archangel Raphael will enter this space, and we will work together to do some more “advanced” or targeted energy channeling.
Closing the Session
Eventually, I feel the universal life energy “withdraw.” (Essentially, the intensity of the pulsing in my hand and feet chakras is greatly reduced, and I feel as if a veil has been lifted from my senses, as my eyes open fully and I become more aware of my physical surroundings). I ask my healing guides if they have any further guidance for you or me, and I “listen.” Finally, when that is complete, I offer a prayer of thanks to Archangel Raphael, our guides, and Reiki for their assistance.
To stop the connection of our energies, I ground any excess energy by touching my hands and feet to the floor. I blow out the candle that I lit before the session to further help me with the process of disconnection, and then I ask Archangel Michael to sever any energetic ties that may remain. And then your session is complete.
There you have it: my distance-Reiki process in a nutshell. Every practitioner has his or her own method, but that’s the basic structure I follow. It continues to evolve, and I am excited by that, because my ability to help my clients is constantly expanding and improving!
Speaking of which, I’m planning exciting updates and changes to the website over the next few months, so keep an eye out for even more additions to the services I offer.
